The
Prefecture of Kavala
While
on Thassos you can take the ferry and go for a day trip to the beautiful
city of Kavala.
Kavala is built amphitheatrically along the beach. It lies along
the Gulf of Kavala in the northern Aegean Sea. The town is built
on a promontory-stretching south into the gulf, and opposite the
island of Thassos. Kavala is a modern city with a traditional look.
It is a city with a great history and it plays an important role
for the areas of Macedonia and Thrace. It is said to be the most
beautiful city in Macedonia. |
|
PANAGIA,
Êaíala's foundation stone. Built on the ruins of the first Thassian colony
that used to be the heart of the city until the end of the nineteenth
century. The town's Turkish quarter is surrounded by Byzantine walls and
occupies the small promontory, which is crowned by a Byzantine castle.
Very few alterations have been made so that Panagia keeps its distinct
traditional look. Take a walk on traditional pavement and admire the beauty
of the gardens ablaze with color. While ascending you can discover plenty
of scenic spots and admire the city below you. Mehemet Ali's residence
is located by the edge of the headland and the Imaret looks down on the
harbor. Õïu can rest at picturesque tavernas or cafes. This is the most
authentic example of traditional architecture in Macedonia.
The
new town spreads out north of the main harbor, which was formed by the
construction of two long moles after World War II. A Roman aqueduct stands
by the old town, and numerous other Roman and Byzantine artifacts remain,
many of them housed in the archaeological museum that opened in 1965.
Á Walk around the market will give you the opportunity of meeting the
locals. The elegant neoclassical mansions in Kyprou Street, built in the
nineteenth century, are snapshots of the past. Én the city center the
old tobacco warehouses, that still gives forth a strong smell of tobacco,
have been transformed into nightclubs, cafes and a mall. Enjoy a stroll
along the waterfront and run your eyes over the fishing boats. The city
is vibrant with life day and night.

Kavala
is now a major warehousing and export center for the tobacco-growing
districts of northern Greece. East of the town, drained marshland
supports rice and melon cultivation. Bee keeping is also important,
and local vineyards produce table grapes and table wines. Of course,
the marble can’t be forgotten. The top quality marble of the area
has been traveling all over the world since antiquity. The marble
of Thassos is the whitest marble found anywhere in the world.
Easily
accessible, by all means, air, sea and land, Kavala becomes the
perfect destination... |
